Industry-University-Research Integration

Mr. Wang Guoxing, Secretary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered a speech for this lecture. Mr. Wang said, “In promoting the integration of industry, academia and research in the semiconductor industry, SJTU has formed close cooperation with enterprises in the field of industry, academia and research, with the orientation of market demand as the main focus, and has established the mechanism of talent cultivation jointly by enterprises and universities, and has built a joint platform for scientific research, in order to cultivate and develop the emerging industry, and to train more excellent talents and provide fresh blood for the industry, and to provide new blood for the industry. More excellent talents, provide fresh blood for the industry, inject new vitality, and at the same time increase the promotion of industry chain synergistic development and promote the transformation of innovation results. The forum provides such a relatively fixed communication platform to promote the exchange and integration of talents, technologies, and information among various parties in industry, academia, and research.”

Reviewing the History The lecture began with a review of the history of computer and chip development, Huang Yiren said: “From the birth of the first computer in 1946, the invention of semiconductors in 1948, to the founding of Fairchild in 1957, Intel in 1968, and then in the 1990s John Hennesey and Prof. Dave Patterson The current computing architecture was laid down in the 1990s by Prof. John Hennesey and Prof. Dave Patterson, and has had a very profound impact on computer architecture for decades. And after 2000, the original Moore’s Law has been gradually lost, and a new DSA (Domain Specific Architecture) architecture is needed to change the whole computing architecture.”

Over the last 40-50 years, CPU’s microprocessors have evolved over a long period of time where Moore’s Law actually doubles the performance metrics and doubles the power of the CPU in 18 months. Moore’s Law has been right for quite some time, but in recent years, because of the whole semiconductor development, Moore’s Law has started to gradually not be able to be realized on top of the chip, and the chip needs to be further developed in other ways to get the performance metrics and other aspects. There are several directions of development, one of which is through the parallel computing approach, the DSA architecture mentioned by John Hennesey and Prof. Dave Patterson. With the recent development of multi-core processors in the last few years, CPU performance metrics are further moving in this direction, and Moore’s Law can continue to evolve. Looking back at decades of development in Silicon Valley, one can see a new technology development that is actually moving forward by way of Hypercycle. DPU Development With the new Heterogeneous Computing Architecture, we are able to provide the most efficient and cost-effective solution for the data centers, and to provide the most efficient and cost-effective solution for the data centers. In recent years, the big companies frequently out of Intel’s acquisition of Barefoot self-developed IPU, to AMD’s acquisition of Pensando, Pensando is mainly doing P4 DPU, and then NVIDIA successfully acquired Mellanox, Mellanox in the DPU smart card, from these perspectives, the importance of the DPU is now more and more being seen by everyone.
